“There's many a man has more hair than wit.”
How great would it be if we could stop losing hair? I know most of us aren’t thrilled when we start seeing our hair start to thin or stop growing completely. It’s not something anyone looks forward to as they age. In this article, we are going to run through the top five treatments we think are legit.
#5 Stress management
It’s not an old wives’ tale. Stress can cause you to lose hair. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “illness childbirth, and yes, stress can cause temporary hair loss.” The idea is that the body reacts by communicating to hair follicles to go into resting phase (telogen), and, alas, say hello to thinning hair.
Do you remember all the Rogaine ads that used to be played? Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine. It’s used over the counter in the US and available up to 5% concentration. When used daily, there have been some very promising results. Keep in mind that it doesn’t cause new hair to grow, however, it just stops the hair you do have from falling out.
Starting in the late 1990’s, this compound was initially marketed under the name of “Propecia” for male pattern baldness. Though there have been some conflicting reports on side effects, it appears it works for hair restoration. Although hotly debated there may be some evidence that Oral Finasteride may cause erectile dysfunction. Hot tip: there are topical solutions available which should reduce or eliminate several of the side effects.
#2 Follicular transplantation
Surgical procedures are not a fit for everyone, but they do have a high rate of success. Hair transplant devices such as AART and NeoGraft work to transplant individual follicles. These devices transplant individual follicules from one part of the scalp to another. This is a lot less invasive in comparison with some of the other surgical hair transplant techniques. If you are open to it, look for a practitioner in your area as they are very popular and have minimal downtime.
#1 Platelet rich plasma (PRP)
This minimally invasive technology uses your own growth factors to grow hair again. According to hair specialist and surgeon Dr. Farhan Taghizaday, substances such as PRP (platelet rich plasma) and more recently amnion “turn on a switch in hair follicles that signals them to grow again.” Dr. Taghizaday also believes that “with more research and a better understanding, these technologies will one day eliminate baldness.” Wahoo! This is very exciting for millions of Americans who struggle with hair loss!
We’ve now given five of our top pics for hair regrowth. This is not to say there aren’t other things you can do. Eating a clean diet, getting enough iron, and watching your intake of vitamin A were also contenders for the list but we will talk more on that for future articles. For the time being, do yourself a favor and consult your local physician if you are interested in this. The celebs do it, and it works for them, so why can’t you?
