Here is part 2 of our article on Vitamin C & E Ferulic Serum and what it does:
Vitamin E serum
Another anti-oxidant used in skin care is vitamin E. Tocopherol is the scientific name for vitamin E and which is a key component for your skin and anti-oxidant protection. It works hand in hand with vitamin C as part of the body’s anti-oxidant strategy against damage from sunlight. In a study published in the Peer Reviewed Open Access Journal (PLOS) the use of vitamin E helped to create new blood vessels to the skin. While this might seem random and you are probably saying to yourself “who cares?” it’s important because the skin needs a consistent supply of nutrients and oxygen. Without this skin will lose it’s elasticity (bounce-back) and can lead to a whole pile of skin related issues. Quick tip: when looking on the bottle or box of an anti-oxidant serum look for the name “tocopherol,” which is how you will know if it has vitamin E in the serum.
Ferulic acid
Another potent anti-oxidant is ferulic acid, which is found in several fruits and vegetables. It is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. We like anti-inflammatory substances because your when your skin reacts to the sun, pollution, stress, etc this can slow down the process. In a study published in 2007 by the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition ferulic acid can absorb UV rays and keep skin cells from being damaged by the open air. Considering we are now living in an age where pollution and other air quality issues exist this is a compelling argument for the usage of ferulic acid in your skin care regimen.
Vitamin C, E and Ferulic Acid
The combination of these three superstar anti-oxidants is immense. But, you have to watch out for what is in the mixture. A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that serums with 15% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), 1% Tocopherol (vitamin E) and .5% ferulic acid increased the anti-oxidant effects by 8 times what vitamin C alone can do! Think about that for a second. Anti-aging, pigment issues and sun damage could potentially go bye-bye? That’s huge.
Using the combination
It’s very clear that the combination of vitamin C, E and ferulic acid make a powerful trio. In a perfect world to use this a person would first wash their face with an appropriate cleanser, use the C/E ferulic combo, followed by a sunscreen (preferably with moisturizer in it) for their daytime program. There are a few brands that sell this combination for over $150, which seems crazy! As an alternative, we have made an agreement with a compounding pharmacy to create our own C+E+ferulic acid serum. It should be out shortly with a pricetag well under what most competitive brands charge. In the meantime, we can be of help to put together a personalized program skin care program for you. Take a look (click here) when you get a chance- it is built to give results, be easy and save you time.
